OKLAHOMA CITY (Aug. 9, 2014) – A renewal of the series with cross-Edmond rival Central Oklahoma and 15 home games highlight the Oklahoma Christian women’s basketball schedule for the 2014-15 season, which coach Stephanie Findley announced Saturday.
The schedule includes OC’s first meeting with UCO since the Lady Eagles swept a pair of games near the start of the 2006-07 season. OC leads the series 20-11 and has won the last three against the Bronchos, although the teams have met only four times since the 1988-89 season, when UCO was transitioning from the NAIA into NCAA Division II. OC now is making a similar transition, leading to a resumption of the series.
OC will open the season Nov. 15 against York (Neb.) in the traditional homecoming game. Three days later, the Lady Eagles will visit UCO.
Then will come a four-game homestand, as OC will host a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference squads, Texas Wesleyan (Nov. 20) and USAO (Nov. 22) before taking on a pair of quality NCAA Division II foes in Washburn (Kan.) on Nov. 25 and Arkansas Tech on Nov. 29.
It will be the first meeting between OC and Arkansas Tech – a longtime small-college power – since March 1980, when they played in the old AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) regional playoffs and ATU won 64-46. OC coach Stephanie Findley played in that game.
OC will travel to West Texas A&M for a Dec. 6 game before wrapping up nonconference action at home on Dec. 12 against Mid-America Christian. The Lady Eagles beat MACU in last season’s National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region title game.
The Lady Eagles will begin Heartland Conference play on Dec. 18 at home against Texas-Permian Basin, then will host St. Edward’s (Texas) on Dec. 20. OC’s home game against St. Edward’s last season twice was postponed due to weather and never was played.
After the Christmas break, OC will resume league play on New Year’s Day in San Antonio at St. Mary’s (Texas), followed by a trip two days later to Texas A&M International. Three home games come after that – against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 8, Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Jan. 10 and Newman (Kan.) on Jan. 15.
OC will travel to Rogers State on Jan. 22 and Arkansas-Fort Smith on Jan. 24 before two more home games against Texas A&M International on Jan. 29 and St. Mary’s on Jan. 31.
Road games against Lubbock Christian (Feb. 5), Oklahoma Panhandle State (Feb. 7) and Newman (Feb. 12) follow that. Then will come OC’s final regular-season home games, on Feb. 19 against Arkansas-Fort Smith and Feb. 21 against Rogers State.
The Lady Eagles will end the regular season on the road at St. Edward’s on Feb. 26 and Texas-Permian Basin on Feb. 28.
The NCCAA Central Region tournament host hasn’t yet been determined, but the event likely will be held March 12-14. The NCCAA Championship in Winona Lake, Ind., will be March 18-21. OC finished fifth in the national tournament last season.
