OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 5, 2013) – Add Oklahoma Christian’s Martin Poboril to the university’s list of multiple winners of National Christian College Athletic Association weekly honors.
On Tuesday, for the second time this school year, the NCCAA named Poboril as its men’s tennis student-athlete of the week. The national honor came one day after the Heartland Conference presented Poboril with its player-of-the-week award.
Poboril, a senior from Pribram, Czech Republic, starred as the Eagles ran their winning streak to 15 matches by opening the dual season with two wins in the Abilene Christian Indoor/Outdoor Invitational in Abilene, Texas.
Poboril, No. 33 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason NCAA Division III rankings, played at the No. 1 singles position and knocked off NCAA Division III No. 1-ranked Aaron Skinner 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 in the Eagles' 7-2 win over Division III No. 9-ranked Trinity (Texas) on Friday.
The next day, Poboril, playing at the No. 2 position, downed Division II No. 42 Borja Cortes of Abilene Christian 6-3, 6-4 as the Eagles beat Division II's No. 11-ranked squad 7-2.
In doubles play, Poboril teamed with Bruno Tiberti to beat Trinity’s Jordan Mayer and Erick DelaFuente 8-6 on Friday. Against ACU, Tiberti and Poboril – ranked eighth in Division II – fell to No. 3-ranked Hans Hach and Cortes 8-2.
Poboril also earned NCCAA student-athlete of the week honors in October after he reached the singles semifinals and the doubles final in the ITA Division II South Central Region tournament in Abilene. He joins OC men’s golfer Vilhelm Bogstrand as a two-time NCCAA weekly award winner. OC women’s golfer Anna Arrese Cortadellas is a three-time winner in her sport.
So far during the 2012-13 academic year, OC student-athletes have combined to win 15 NCCAA student-athlete of the week awards in nine sports.
