OKLAHOMA CITY (March 20, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian’s standout javelin thrower, Katie Ostlund, has been named as the National Christian College Athletic Association women’s outdoor track and field student-athlete of the week.
Ostlund, a sophomore from Mount Hope, Kan., was honored for her performance in last Thursday’s Southwestern College Invitational in Winfield, Kan., when she opened OC’s outdoor season with a dominating win in the javelin.
Ostlund, who finished third in the NAIA in the event last season, uncorked a throw of 137 feet, 11 inches (42.04 meters), beating the second-place finisher in the 24-woman event by more than 13 1/2 feet. Her throw was the best in the NCCAA this season by a whopping 24 feet and easily qualified her for the NCCAA Outdoor Championships.
She also competed in the hammer throw at Southwestern, finishing 16th among 28 competitors with a throw of 107 feet, 6 inches (32.78 meters).
She was the first OC women’s outdoor track and field athlete to be honored this season with an NCCAA award. During the indoor season, OC sprinter Maegan Cowan also earned a weekly NCCAA honor.
