OC Professor Honored by Marketing Professionals Again
The Oklahoma City chapter of the American Marketing Association has honored one of Oklahoma Christian University’s most beloved professors. The chapter has named its lifetime achievement award after Dr. Burt Smith, honoring his career accomplishments and contributions to marketing and the AMA.
The chapter has only given one lifetime achievement award, which went to Smith in 2008. While a new honoree has not been chosen, the chapter’s past-president’s council decided this year that the award should bear the name of the first recipient.
“We wanted to honor Dr. Burt because he has been such a great force in our organization,” said Brian Blake, the current president of AMA OKC. “This award honors someone who has integrity, a lifetime commitment to being a marketing leader and someone who has been a mentor in our chapter. Burt truly embodies those ideals, so it is fitting that the award be in his name.”
Smith twice served as the chapter’s president and was the first president to lead the members to a National Chapter of Excellence Award. He has served for 15 years on the AMA OKC board since becoming the youngest board member elected in 1995. He has not missed a monthly meeting since 1994.
Smith serves as a professor of marketing and management at Oklahoma Christian. He is also an advisor and professor in the MBA program. In 2009 was honored with the Gaylord Chair of Distinguished Teaching award.
“Dr. Burt Smith is an ideal professor and professional,” said Mike O’Neal, president of Oklahoma Christian. “His energy, his intelligence, his entrepreneurial spirit, his effectiveness in advancing any organization or initiative of which he is a part, and his commitment to the mission of Oklahoma Christian and to his students are exceptional. We are most proud of this recent recognition of the accomplishments of Dr. Smith.”
Smith co-founded and now solely owns EMI Research Solutions and has served clients such as Cox Communications, OG&E, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Subway and the Oklahoma City Zoo.
He was the first Oklahoman to earn the AMA’s Professional Certified Marketer designation. He is one of less than 1,600 professionals worldwide to hold the Sales and Marketing Executive International’s Certified Marketing Executive designation, and he also holds a Certified Quality Manager designation from the American Society for Quality. Smith is the only professional in the world to hold these designations as well as a doctorate.
Smith has served on the board of directors of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and was the certification chair for the Sales and Marketing Executives International. He was also named in the Journal Record’s Centennial Class of Achievers Under 40, as well as the inaugural class of Business OKC’s 40 Under 40.
Smith became an auctioneer at 17 to fund his college education. He was the 2002 Oklahoma State Champion Auctioneer and has raised over $1.2 million for charities across Oklahoma and Texas.
In 2007, Smith published his first book, “The Great Game of Networking.” In 2011, Smith will serve as president of the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Speakers Association.
“Dr. Burt Smith is one of Oklahoma Christian University’s most talented professors,” said Allison Garrett, vice president of academic affairs at Oklahoma Christian. “Burt is a dynamic colleague and OC students have been blessed to have him as a professor. This honor is well deserved.”
