OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 11, 2012) – The National Christian College Athletic Association honored Oklahoma Christian center Will Reinke as its men’s basketball student-athlete of the week on Tuesday, capping one of the best individual weeks by an OC player in recent memory.

In wins over Dallas Christian (Texas), Mid-America Christian and Southwestern Christian, the 6-foot-10 senior from Lawton recorded an astounding 17 dunks.

A video of one of his seven dunks against Mid-America Christian – on which he grabbed the defensive rebound, split two defenders near midcourt, crossed over his dribble near the free-throw line, then jammed the basketball through the rim with his left hand while being fouled – had received more than 5,600 page views as of Tuesday afternoon. Numerous national and local media websites also picked up the video, which quickly made its way through cyberspace.

In the three games, Reinke averaged 20.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.3 blocked shots and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 74.2 percent from the field (23 of 31). Reinke flirted with a triple double in the 87-63 win over MACU, finishing with 27 points, 16 rebounds, six blocked shots and five assists.

On Monday, the Heartland Conference named him as its player of the week. Last season, Reinke twice earned Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week honors. This season for OC (7-4), Reinke is averaging 17.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 64 percent (73 of 114) from the field.

“Will had a tremendous week,” OC coach Dan Hays said. “Will is playing at his highest level since he arrived at OC three years ago. His hard work is paying off and his teammates are doing a great job of getting him the ball on time.”

Reinke, named as a preseason NCAA Division II All-American by Basketball Times, is the first OC men’s basketball player to receive the weekly student-athlete of the week award from the NCCAA. He’s the first OC player to earn a weekly national award since Jason Taylor was named as the NAIA’s player of the week in February 2010.

Reinke is only the fourth OC men’s basketball player ever to earn a national player-of-the-week honor, joining Greg Brown (Jan. 30-Feb. 6, 1994), Jarred Merrill (Dec. 29, 2003-Jan. 4, 2004 and Jan. 30-Feb. 5, 2005) and Taylor (Jan. 12-18, 2009 and Feb. 15-21, 2010). Brown, Merrill and Taylor all received their honors when OC was a member of the NAIA.

During the current academic year, eight OC student-athletes in seven sports (men’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s tennis, men’s basketball, men’s track and field and men’s and women’s golf) have been named as a weekly NCCAA award winner a combined 10 times.

Reinke was one of two OC student-athletes honored Tuesday by the NCCAA, along with junior thrower Larry Brown, who received the weekly NCCAA award for track and field. It’s the third time this academic year that multiple OC student-athletes have received national weekly honors from the NCCAA.
