OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 12, 2013) – It’s turned into a week full of honors for Oklahoma Christian shortstop Kendra Pierce.
On Tuesday, the National Christian College Athletic Association named the sophomore from Oklahoma City as its softball student-athlete of the week. A day earlier, Pierce earned hitter of the week honors from the Heartland Conference. She is the first OC softball student-athlete to receive either of those awards.
The former Westmoore High School standout started the season with a sizzling bat as OC swept Southwestern Christian 12-0 and 20-2 on Saturday in Bethany. In the doubleheader, she slammed four doubles and had 10 RBIs. She went 7-of-10 from the plate (including 5-for-5 in the second game), scored four runs and finished the doubleheader with a gaudy 1.100 slugging percentage.
Pierce, in her first games as OC’s new starting shortstop, also played error-free softball in the field.
“Kendra is a good hitter and she had a terrific start to the season,” OC coach Tom Heath said. “She also made the move from first base to shortstop and played great on defense. We’re looking forward to great things from Kendra this season.”
She was one of three OC student-athletes to receive NCCAA honors on Tuesday. OC tennis players Nicolas Auruccio and Barbora Bozkova were named as the men’s and women’s tennis student-athletes of the week, respectively.
During the 2012-13 school year, 14 OC student-athletes in 11 sports have combined to win NCCAA weekly honors 18 times.
