WACO, Texas (Aug. 4, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian finished the 2013-14 school year atop the Heartland Conference in an important category – overall grade-point average by its student-athletes.

The NCAA Division II conference has released the results of its annual survey of GPAs of league members and OC finished tied with Newman (Kan.) for the best overall athletic department GPA at 3.29.

OC’s women’s teams posted the league’s highest overall GPA, at 3.40, while the men tied for second with an overall GPA of 3.17. Three of OC’s individual teams took conference academic titles – softball (3.53), women’s cross country (3.52) and baseball (3.31).

“This is a great honor for the OC athletic department,” OC Athletic Director Curtis Janz said. “First, I would like to congratulate all the student-athletes, as 125 of the 216 members of our teams made the Heartland Conference Honor Roll for academics. Secondly, our coaches have done a great job of recruiting and stressing the importance of balance between academics and athletics.”

Janz also noted the work of Dean Findley, OC’s director of academic excellence in athletics, in “leading our academic program for our student-athletes. This is what we envisioned when we started the Anderson Endowment for Academic Excellence in Athletics. The generous gift provided by Mo and Richard Anderson has been instrumental in improving academic performance in the OC athletic department.”

Each of OC’s 12 teams had an overall grade-point average of at least 3.06. The GPAs of OC’s track and field teams weren’t included in the overall numbers released by the conference, as the league does not sponsor that sport, but the Eagles had a team GPA of 3.19 while the Lady Eagles’ GPA was 3.32.

In addition to the academic titles won by the softball, women’s cross country and baseball teams, OC’s men’s basketball team finished fifth in the team race for that sport, while the men’s cross country team was fourth, the men’s golf team was third, the men’s soccer team was second, the women’s basketball team was second, the women’s golf team was third and the women’s soccer team was sixth.

Thirteen OC student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2013-14 academic year: Brayden Barrientez (men’s track and field), Rebecca Bloodworth (women’s track and field), Seth Brown (men’s soccer), Aubree Hughes (women’s cross country), Bryant Keirns (men’s cross country), Jordan Lopez (baseball), Matt McLain (men’s soccer), Audrey Meisch (women’s golf), Ryan Nash (baseball), Cody Rosecrans (baseball), Krista Stevens (women’s basketball), Dana Todd (women’s golf) and Andee Wayne (women’s basketball).
