ABILENE, Texas (April 19, 2013) – Bryant Keirns, Evan Fike and Larry Brown each won an event title for Oklahoma Christian on Friday on the first day of the Heartland/McMurry Invitational track and field meet.
The meet included representatives of the three Heartland Conference schools that field track and field programs – OC, McMurry (Texas) and Dallas Baptist (Texas) – and serves as a de facto conference championship, because the conference does not have enough track programs to hold a regular championship. A handful of student-athletes from non-Heartland schools also competed.
After Friday’s seven events, McMurry led the team race with 109 points, with OC second with 86 points and Dallas Baptist third with 14 points. McMurry finished second in the National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor Championships in February, while OC took fourth.
Keirns, a freshman running the 3,000-meter steeplechase this season, ran a season-best 9:45.85 in the event and won by 29.6 seconds in a five-man field. Keirns already had qualified for the NCCAA Outdoor Championships in the event.
Fike, one of two competitors in the 10,000 meters, won with a time of 35:05.97, nearly two minutes ahead of Shane Floyd of McMurry.
In the hammer, Brown unleashed a throw of 49.25 meters to win by more than 6½ meters over runner-up Zachary Frazier of McMurry and three others.
The Eagles picked up a fourth win in the 4x800-meter relay, outdueling McMurry in a tight two-team race. OC’s quartet of Ryan Lutterloh, David Koistinen, Nick Stoots and Brennym Kaelin finished in 8:03.97, .23 of a second ahead of McMurry’s foursome.
Senior Tracy Marshall was OC’s top finisher in the high jump and the long jump. Marshall finished third of five competitors in the high jump with a mark of 1.81 meters and was fourth among eight competitors in the long jump, leaping 6.98 meters.
Austin Wallace was third and Connor Lankford fourth in the seven-man competition in the shot put. Wallace’s top throw was 12.11 meters, while Lankford’s best mark was 11.96 meters.
The meet will conclude on Saturday.
