TISHOMINGO, Okla. (Nov. 21, 2012) – With only one left-handed pitcher on his team, Oklahoma Christian baseball coach Lonny Cobble knew he needed to add some more southpaws to the Eagles’ roster.
Cobble has taken the first step toward that goal during the ongoing NCAA signing period, signing Garrett Sumpter, a transfer from Murray State College, to a letter of intent. OC is in the first year of the NCAA Division II membership process.
Sumpter, from Irving, Texas, went 8-3 with one save and a 5.43 ERA in 18 appearances as a freshman last spring for the Aggies, who compete in NJCAA Division II. He recorded 55 strikeouts and 29 walks in 63 innings.
The only left-handed pitcher on OC’s current roster is returnee Kelby Reneau.
“We are thinking he can come in and get some quality starts for us,” Cobble said of the 5-foot-11 Sumpter.
Cobble said that during scrimmages this fall, Sumpter has given up only three earned runs for Murray State.
