Johnston reaches round of 16 in California Amateur Championship
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 19, 2013) – Fresh off being named as a Division II All-American, Oklahoma Christian golfer Sam Johnston has advanced to the round of 16 in the 102nd California Amateur Championship at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.
Johnston, a rising sophomore from San Diego, advanced through stroke-play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday before downing eighth-seeded Stewart Hagestad – a rising senior at NCAA Division I Southern California – 2-up in the first round of match play on Wednesday.
Johnston tied for 23rd in stroke play, shooting an even-par 72 on Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course and a 4-over-par 76 on the club’s Dunes Course.
Playing on the Dunes Course on Wednesday, Hagestad was 3-up on Johnston after 13 holes before evening the match with birdies on the next three holes. Johnston took his first lead of the match with a par on No. 17, then sealed the win with an eagle on the par-5 No. 18.
Johnston, seeded 25th, advanced to play 24th-seeded Matt Hansen – a rising senior at California-Davis – in Thursday’s round of 16. The quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Friday, with the title match scheduled for Saturday.
