PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 20, 2013) – Sam Johnston’s run through the 102nd California Amateur Championship ended Thursday, as the Oklahoma Christian golfer fell in the round of 16 to California-Davis senior-to- be Matt Hansen 3-and-1 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

The 25th-seeded Johnston, a sophomore-to-be from San Diego, knocked off the tournament’s eighth seed in the first round of match play but held the lead only once in his match on the Dunes Course against Hansen, who is seeded 24th.

Hansen was 2-up after five holes before Johnston rallied to win the next three holes with pars to go 1-up. Hansen took advantage of a bogey by Johnston on the par-5 No. 9 to even the match at the turn.

Johnston bogeyed No. 12 to fall a hole back and Hansen’s birdie on No. 13 put him back ahead 2-up.The duo halved the next three holes and Hansen clinched the match by parring No. 17 while Johnston bogeyed.
