Herbst, Johnston make PING Division II All-Region team
MACON, Ga. (May 31, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian golfers Logan Herbst and Sam Johnston were named Friday to the PING Division II South Central All-Region team, as chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Herbst, a senior from Fairview, Okla., and Johnston, a freshman from San Diego, were among 109 players across eight regions honored by the GCAA.
Herbst posted a 73.52 stroke average during the 2012-13 season, ranking him fifth in the Heartland Conference and 52nd among NCAA Division II players in that category. He posted six top-10 finishes during his senior season, highlighted by a fourth-place showing in the San Antonio Shoot-Out to open the spring campaign.
Herbst, a second-team All-Heartland Conference pick, was named as the National Christian College Athletic Association student-athlete of the week once and finished his career as a four-time All-America honoree by either the NAIA or NCCAA.
Johnston set several freshman records at OC, including wins and scoring average. With a 71.56 stroke average, he led the Heartland Conference by nearly a stroke per round in that category and stood fourth in Division II as of Friday.
Johnston won two tournaments, the U.C. Ferguson Classic in September at Lincoln Park Golf Club’s West Course in Oklahoma City and the Winchester Classic last month at Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista, Calif. In the Oklahoma event, he tied the tournament scoring record, and in the California event, he beat 50 NCAA Division I golfers.
He was named as the Heartland Conference player of the week three times and received first-team all-conference honors. He also was named as the NCCAA student-athlete of the week three times and earned first-team NCCAA All-America honors last fall.
