OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 10, 2012) – A dominating week by Oklahoma Christian center Will Reinke was recognized by the Heartland Conference, which named him Monday as its men’s basketball player of the week.
The 6-foot-10 senior from Lawton dominated in wins over Dallas Christian (Texas), Mid-America Christian and Southwestern Christian, averaging 20.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.3 blocked shots and 3.0 assists per game. He shot 74.2 percent from the field (23 of 31) thanks in good part to his 17 dunks during the three games.
One of those dunks was a coast-to-coast number against Mid-America Christian in which Reinke snagged a defensive rebound, split two defenders near midcourt, crossed over his dribble near the free-throw line, then jammed the basketball through the rim with his left hand while being fouled. He made the ensuing free throw.
A video of that dunk (see video clip below) appeared on a handful of national websites, including www.yardbarker.com, and on most Oklahoma City-area media websites. The original version of the video on YouTube had received more than 5,000 views as of early Monday afternoon.
Reinke flirted with a triple double in the 87-63 win over MACU, finishing with 27 points, 16 rebounds, six blocked shots and five assists.
“He had 17 dunks last week,” OC coach Dan Hays said. “They were dropping the kitchen sink on him and it hardly fazed him. We’ve had guys score more points in a week, but we haven’t had anybody give us a highlight film for three nights like that.”
Reinke, named as a preseason NCAA Division II All-American by Basketball Times, is the first OC men’s basketball player to receive a Heartland Conference award since the university joined the conference and began the NCAA Division II membership process earlier this year. As a junior, he twice earned Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week honors.
This season for OC (7-4), Reinke is averaging 17.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 64 percent (73 of 114) from the field.
