FORT SMITH, Ark. (March 25, 2013) – Anna Arrese Cortadellas held the individual lead and Oklahoma Christian was second after the opening round of the Lions Classic on a cold Monday at Hardscrabble Country Club.
Arrese Cortadellas, seeking what would be her second straight tournament win and the sixth of her career, overcame temperatures in the mid 30s and a wind chill in the mid 20s to record three birdies and fire a 6-over-par 66 on the 5,829-yard course. She held a one-shot lead over Linzi Allan and Kiersten Klekner-Alt, both of Newman (Kan.).
OC posted a team score of 320, four shots behind Heartland Conference rival Newman and five shots ahead of another league rival, Dallas Baptist (Texas).
On a day when the average score was almost 86, OC players fared well. Sarah Harper shot a 79 for OC and was tied for fifth. Catherine Odgers’ 82 was good for a tie for 13th and Morgan Dockery was another shot back at 83, tied for 16th in the 45-woman field.
OC freshman Audrey Meisch shot an 87 and was 27th.
The Lady Eagles will play the tournament’s final round on Tuesday. OC has finished second eight times in the program’s two-year history but has not won a tournament title as a team.
