OC welcomes Berry Tramel to campus Oct. 31 Tramel is one of the state's most-loved sports journalists

Oct 29, 2018

Berry Tramel, a revered Oklahoma sports journalist, will speak in OC's main chapel Oct 31. Tramel was born and raised in Oklahoma and entered the writing world at the early age of 17. He has been on staff at The Oklahoman for 27 years, where he served as a writer, assistant sports editor, sports editor and columnist. Tramel’s stories and blog posts are highly respected statewide. OC is honored to have someone as well-known in their field as Tramel to speak to students on campus. His talk will be at 11 a.m. in Hardeman Auditorium.

OC’s Associate Athletic Director, Murray Evans, worked with Tramel in previous years and speaks highly of him and his work.

“OC has never had a journalist of this caliber speak in chapel,” said Evans. “He’s a great storyteller, so I know it will be worthwhile.”

Tramel connected with President John deSteiguer through a few connections at OC. He already knew Murray and met Athletic Director David Lynn recently at a conference. After being introduced to President deSteiguer, it did not take long for deSteiguer to invite Tramel to campus. Tramel often references faith in his columns, and the president knew Tramel would be a perfect fit at OC.

In addition to speaking at chapel, Tramel will speak to a combined meeting of the practicum classes in the communication department. The classes are for OC’s online student newspaper (the Talon), student-run TV news show (Eagle Angle) and student-run PR firm (Eagle PR). Tramel will also speak to students in the communication course Writing Across Media before chapel.
