OC students recognized for Betsy Plank PR competition

May 10, 2018

Oklahoma Christian University's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America ranked among only seven colleges in the nation for its Betsy Plank social media campaign and service project in April. Sponsored by the Plank Center for Public Relations Leadership, the Betsy Plank competition is a national celebration of a woman known as the Godmother of PRSSA. Her contributions to the industry, example of leadership and passion for students have shaped the definition of success in the field today.

The competition involved a national social media campaign using the hashtag #BetsyPlank. More than 45 PRSSA Chapters, student-run firms and organizations competed. Seven organizations were in the running for the Betsy Plank Championship title by completing an additional two-step process  — watching the Betsy Plank documentary and giving back to their campus or community in her honor. OC's chapter was named an Honorable Mention.

OC's students gave back when they helped with clean-up and organization at a local church following a large community Easter event that was free to hundreds of children in the community. This was the first year that OC's chapter participated in the Besty Plank competition.

"Betsy Plank was a pioneer for women as a public relations executive and advocate for students," said OC Assistant Professor of Communication Josh Watson, who serves as the adviser for OC's chapter. "I am proud of how OC students aligned their faith and service in Plank's honor."

A number of OC's PRSSA students took part in the competition, but it was especially led by Paige Steeley, Paige Adams and Haleigh Evans.
