OC freshmen entertain at annual Fanfare Sept. 21-22 Nearly 2,000 visitors come to OC each year for Freshman Fanfare

Nearly 2,000 visitors will attend Oklahoma Christian University's Freshman Fanfare, an annual event started in 1991 to get freshmen more involved on campus and provide a chance to show off their talents. The entertaining variety show allows hundreds of new OC students to join together in producing a fun show that builds camaraderie and community. The event is the highlight of OC's Fall Visit, a weekend when OC hosts high school students considering college.

OC’s Student Events Coordinator Amanda Watson has led Fanfare for three years. She enjoys the opportunity freshmen have to showcase their talents in unique ways.

“We have always had intramurals, academic activities and some sort of first-week program like Earn Your Wings,” Watson said. “There was nothing that allowed our newest students to showcase their talents.”

Watson organizes Fanfare and oversees two upperclassmen as they direct the show. This year’s directors are Olivia Bryant and Jacob Knox; they write the choreography and lyrics and run the practices. Watson likes how her role allows her to work with upperclassmen, too.

“The reason I like fanfare is that I get to work with a lot of upperclassmen helping the freshman get established at OC,” Watson said. “I also love getting to know the freshman right as they get to OC.”

Fanfare co-director Olivia Bryant is a sophomore who was in Fanfare last year. Due to her positive experience, she wanted to direct this year’s show.

“I loved Fanfare and met so many people,” said Bryant. “I wanted to create that kind of fun environment for these freshmen. I also helped direct the freshman Spring Sing show, which made me feel much more prepared to do something as big as Fanfare this year.”

Bryant has found the directing experience rewarding.

“The best part is teaching them the songs and dances and seeing how excited they get,” Bryant said. “I am looking forward to seeing the whole show come together. I have seen each aspect of the show separately, but when it is one big continuous show, that will be cool to see after so much planning and practice.”

OC’s Freshman Fanfare runs Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. in Hardeman Auditorium. Tickets are $8 and are available at OC’s box office next to Hardeman or online at www.oc.edu/fanfare.
