We had 17 students participate in a spontaneous music-making experience. Using xylophones, marimbas, and other percussion instruments of all sorts, and playing only the notes of the pentatonic scale (equivalent to black keys on a piano) we created rhythmic and melodic patterns which evolved over time, and then asked some students to improvise pentatonic melodies above the patterns.
