Highlights from Honors Summer Academy
The Oklahoma Christian Honors Academy is an annual, seven-day college experience hosted by the University Honors Program to encourage the pursuit of excellence by gifted and talented students finishing their freshman through junior years of high school. It is held on the campus of Oklahoma Christian University.
The program is accepting applications from high school students who already have demonstrated excellence in academics seeking to develop those skills for exceptional university performance. By the end of the program, students will have developed the confidence to continue their academic trajectory of excellence, link academics to their faith, and demonstrate the impact of experiential learning in academic and in service activity.
We believe confidence in these core skills will contribute to increased resilience and persistence necessary to achieve exceptional performance following high school graduation.
Program Description:
Each participant may earn two hours of university credit each summer by selecting two of the following courses from the appropriate grade level. Students can earn up to six university credits by attending three summers. Credits are based on face-to-face instruction time as well as Blackboard/internet activity before and after the time in residence at OC. Course faculty are OC Master teachers.
2013 Summer Courses include introductions to the following topics and themes:
Sophomores* (2013-2014) choose from:
1) Homer - Dr. Peter Patton, with field trip to Greek and Roman Exhibition
2) Introduction to Engineering -CLOSED, Course is Full, please choose a different class- taught by OC's Faculty in ABET accredited Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Engineering
3) History of Science - Dr. Len Feuerhelm, with visit to see Galileo’s book
4) Bible - Worldview: The Story You Live In - Ben Langford, help students understand how they view the world according to the stories they live by everyday and will lead them deeper into God’s narrative for the world.
Juniors* (2013-2014) choose from:
1) Introduction to Engineering-CLOSED, Course is Full, please choose a different class-taught by OC's Faculty in ABET accredited Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Engineering
2) History of the Bible - Dr. Richard Wright, introduction to the fascinating and complex set of processes and technologies that have led to the various modern translations of the Bible; consider (among other things) how the Bible was written and distributed, the decisions that went into determining which books to include in the Bible, and why there are so many translations.
3) Holocaust Literature - Dr. Willie Steele, includes visit with Holocaust survivors
4) Cell Biology - Dr. Eric Phelps, with lab culturing of HeLa Cells
1) Introduction to Concepts in Mathematics and Computer Science - Don Leftwich, Dr. Lindsay Prugh, Paul Howard - think about and explore areas of mathematics and technology that they will not likely have encountered before.
2) Introduction to Engineering -CLOSED, Course is full, please choose a different class- taught by OC's Faculty in ABET accredited Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Engineering.
3) Bible - Luke - Dr. John Harrison, with service project to Summer Literacy Program.
4) Introduction to Musical Understanding and Creativity -Dr. John Fletcher, a primer of musical understanding and a launching point for each student's musical creativity for music readers and non-readers.
These for-credit courses are organized with inspiring co-curriculum so that experiential learning links with excellent, Christian faculty to provide an outstanding introduction to undergraduate excellence!
Requirements:
Participants must have at least an ACT of 21/SAT of 980/PSAT of 98 or be recommended by a teacher or counselor (eg. Enrichment/Gifted-Talented teachers) for their current grade year. Participants must be ready to engage in a service project which will vary each year. (Examples include working to understand the people and culture of Rwanda through the OC People to People chapter or serving in a local gardens/produce project in a local urban ministry.)
Cost for 2013 is $500. A $100 deposit is required when you apply with complete payment due by May 1st.
Register with a friend and you each receive a $50 discount.
The cost of the Summer Honors Academy has been underwritten to provide tuition for 2 semester hours to each high school student. This allows us to keep the Academy cost to $500 each for expenses and board.
