Department of Communication

Overview

OC’s communication department is on the forefront of preparing students for a variety of careers in the field. Communication students produce the university newspaper and yearbook, and get hands-on experience producing weekly TV newscasts and programs for the school radio station. Students can get more experience and hone their crafts through local and national internships. Students often win state, regional and national competitions. Alumni have won Emmys, an Edward R. Murrow award and other prestigious honors.

OC’s Theater students perform five major productions each year. Besides cast opportunities, students can be involved in costume, set, lighting and sound design, or by serving as director or stage manager.

Mission Statement

Oklahoma Christian University prepares students to become knowledgeable and contributing citizens who glorify God through lives of faith, scholarship and service.  To accomplish this mission, the university is committed to educating students from a foundation of Christian faith to think, act and communicate in a complex, demanding, and changing global community. The Department of Communication actively contributes to this mission.

In its classes, performances, honor fraternities, professional clubs and student media, the Department of Communication works through:

  • words to honor the One who called himself the Word;
  • stories to be like the Master Teacher who scarcely taught without a parable;
  • images to remind the world of a God who made man in his own image;
  • speech to access its power like the One who scrambled speech at the Tower of Babel and brought it back together again at Pentecost; and
  • drama to be like God who chose to ransom the world through the Passion of the cross.

As a result, OC Communication students and faculty think critically, communicate effectively, and serve their communities willingly - all within a framework of faith.
